Sandlin bought his first camera in 2004 to document touring musicians at The Grey Eagle Music Hall in Asheville, North Carolina, where he worked as the bartender. In the two decades since, Sandlin has photographed thousands of musicians, celebrities, and everyday people.

Sandlin’s photography has appeared on dozens of album covers and in numerous publications including The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, NPR, Garden and Gun, Southern Living, National Geographic Traveler, Playboy, The Bitter Southerner, Paste, Bluegrass Unlimited, Filter, No Depression, and Oxford American, featured in the Great Australian Songbook, Tom Morello's 'Whatever It Takes' retrospective, the touring show "We Shoot Rock (2010)," and the cover of guitarist Marc Ribot's autobiography, Nelle Mie Corde. Outside of music and portrait photography, Sandlin’s travel photography documentation has taken him to five continents.

When not taking photos Sandlin can be found playing mini golf with his kids, coaching soccer, judging KCBS bbq contests and growing veggies in the garden.
